The world of family law rights can be tricky for employers. The rules governing family rights, the qualifying conditions for obtaining those rights, the procedures to be followed and the forms to be filled in for each type of leave are notoriously complicated. That, coupled with the fact that the law in relation to family rights for employees seems to change on an almost weekly basis, makes it an area that many employers tend to avoid.
Family law rights is an area which is worth being at least vaguely familiar with, so that you know what considerations you need to make as an employer when an employee makes that happy announcement. The policies and links below provide a useful overview of flexible working, parental leave, and maternity and paternity rights.
The laws on Shared Parental Leave are in force and apply to children born after 5 April 2015. Our new policy (see below) sets out the complex provisions in relation to this new right, and we have drafted the relevant forms for your employees to complete, and the relevant letters for you to send at each stage.
